Punjab Considers Changes to School Academic Calendar
May 17, 2026Rana Sikandar Hayat has said the Punjab government is considering changes to the province’s academic calendar, including a possible review of long summer vacations in schools.
Speaking on the issue, the provincial education minister said extended summer holidays were negatively affecting students’ studies and confirmed that consultations were underway regarding possible adjustments to the educational schedule.
He said the government was considering a proposal under which schools could reopen on alternate weeks after summer vacations. According to Rana Sikandar Hayat, a revised academic calendar may also be prepared in consultation with private schools.
The minister said authorities were also developing alternative teaching plans for unexpected school closures and reviewing the impact of Friday weekly holidays on academic activities.
He stated that schools should ideally complete at least 180 academic days annually, while institutions are currently operating for around 140 days each year. To address the shortfall, the Punjab government is also considering allowing summer camps lasting between 30 and 45 days.
Rana Sikandar Hayat added that any final decision would take into account weather conditions across Punjab, especially extreme temperatures in South Punjab and infrastructure challenges faced by government schools.
